THE MONUMENT

Despite the tampering, the vegetation and the great accumulations of material of collapse deposited in the outside and in all the vain insides, still before the beginning of the excavations (2003) the nuraghe Nuracale didn't hide the essential elements of its mighty complex structure. In fact the ruins of the central tower were recognizable (Á.) and of the great quadrilateral bastion with ample courtyard to the inside (B), delimited by four straight walls and provided of as many secondary towers disposed to the angles (C, D, E, F);

They were visible the rests of numerous buildings belonging to the installation extended around the main monument, partly on the adjacent level surface and partly on the Riu Mannu slope valley.

With the removal of some hundred meters cubes of basaltic blocks, stones and earth (belonging to the native structures and collapsed downward during the millennia because of the static disarrangements, of the roots and of the atmospheric agents), they have become evident some details: the superior room of the central tower (A2), under which the great inaccessible inferior room is still found (A1); the two ramps of the staircase (one of which visible
in the picture 19) that they connect in vertical the inferior room with the passage of the superior room and this with the summit of the central tower where could perhaps find place a third non preserved room; the vast courtyard (B), extended to the whole inclusive space between the East and South curtains and the central tower; the main entry opened in the East curtain and the accesses to the rooms A1, C, D and And; the small vain (G) drawn in the inclusive masonry among the central tower Á. and the tower F; the staircase drawn in the thickness of the West curtain (H) and destined to allow the passage from the courtyard B the vain G and the room of the tower F.
The first results of excavations have not clarified if the nuraghe has risen all together from a brave and articulated unitary project, or if the body of 4 towers has subsequently developed around a native isolated tower. (Alessandro Usai)
