THE NURAGHE NURACALE AND ITS TERRITORY

The great nuraghe of Nuracale certainly constituted a point of reference of primary importance for the ancient nuragic tribes installed in the territory of Scano Montiferro and also for the Sardinian punics and romans communities that kept on living in that zone at least up to the Middle Age, that is up to the 1000 A. C.
Preceded by other more archaic monuments with corridor or embryonic room, that however didn't maintain for a long time a dominant role in the territory (around 1600-1500 B. C.), Nuracale was erected in a following phase (around 1500-1350 to. C.) together with numerous other simple nuraghis and complexes characterized by circular rooms covered by tall domes in stone.
As numerous other great nuraghis, is very probable that Nuracale has worked for some centuries as center of coordination of the developed economic activities, under the control of one or more egemony family groups, from some hundred inhabitants divided in different villages: agriculture, breeding, hunting, fishing, harvest, exchange, handicraft productions of various kind. The capillary occupation of the territory is today still testified by the rests of the nuraghis, of the installations and of the megalitic graves. (Alessandro Usai)
